The East Gipsy Band from Budapest is a colorful new presence on the Hungarian music scene as well as in world music. The band’s unique style integrates the Roma musical traditions of various regions, Hungarian folk, classical and jazz. This approachable and highly entertaining union of forms is realized with astonishing originality and at an extremely high artistic level.

A longtime saxophonist on Rolling Stones tours, Tim Ries’s association with Hungarian musicians goes back to 1989, when he met drummer Elemer Balazs. Elemer’s brother Jozsef, the pianist, is responsible for the groups inception in 2012. Their first CD, Ageless Message, will be released worldwide in 2016. The ensemble has already recorded music for their second album, which will be released in conjunction with an HBO Europe documentary about this fantastic musical journey.

Tim brought the East Gypsy band to The United States and Canada for two successful tours. They performed at many prestigious venues, including The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, Smalls, and Drom in NYC; The Regatta Bar in Boston; The Philadelphia Museum Of Art; The University of Pittsburgh; The Detroit Jazz Festival; and Koerner Hall at The Royal Conservatory of Music, The University of Toronto and The Rex Jazz club in Toronto, ON.

Members of the East Gipsy Band are: Gusztav Balogh-vocals, Lajos Sarkozi-violin & guitar, Vilmos Olah-cymbalum, Jozsef Balazs-piano, Elemer Balazs-drums, George Orban-bass and Tim Ries-saxophones.
