Portugal’s own Gisela João, singer of Fado, was influenced by the greats of Fado history. With the release of two albums, she is already garnering awards and praise in the Portuguese press for her range of emotion, authentic Fado soul, and for, at the same time, incorporating the contemporary sound of urban music.
Areas of Representation: North America
Three years after her debut album, Portugal’s Gisela João has released her much anticipated second album in November 2016. Titled “Nua,” it features Fados, just the way she feels them and likes them to sound. Like the first album, “Nua” was recorded outside the usual studio environment, between the Palácio de Santa Catarina in Lisbon and the Cidadela de Cascais.
“Nua” honors some of Gisela’s greatest musical references, such as Amália Rodrigues, Beatriz da Conceição, Argentina Santos, Chavela Vargas, and Cartola; gives voice to the words of some present-day poets, like the Portuguese rapper Capicua and the poet Ana Sofia Paiva; and surprises us by showing that wherever it originated, the music that passes through the voice of Gisela João is always fado.
Gisela will start 2017 with a January performance on Eurosonic 2017, one of Europe’s premium music showcase festivals, spearheading the Portuguese entourage. In recent years, she has performed in major venues and festivals of Portugal and throughout the rest of Europe, and in the United States, Brazil, and Angola.
She was honored with the awards for the album “Gisela João” by the Portuguese media (Expresso, BLITZ, Público, Time Out, GQ …) and two prizes of enormous prestige (Amália Rodrigues and José Afonso). She also presented the musical show “Caixinha de Música” (covering songs by Nick Cave, Violeta Parra, Amy Winehouse and Leonard Cohen) and was a guest performer with musicians from other genres, like Sérgio Godinho, Joss Stone, Linda Martini, Nicolas Jaar and Snarky Puppy.
Gisela João will continue to defend the essence of Fado – wherever Fado may come from – with her body, heart and soul. Because this is her fate and her destiny.
