Nomads of Sound
Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares has been devoted to presenting Bulgarian folk music in choral form for nearly 70 years, performing more than 1250 concerts in major concert halls all over the world. The choir’s current project, Nomads of Sound, features guest singer Lisa Gerrard, well known as half of the duo, “Dead Can Dance” as well as a highly acclaimed film composer. This project seeks the connection of the Bulgarian folklore with other traditions and cultures, and the unique voice and style of Lisa Gerrard takes the music to a different level and helps it cross borders.
Areas of Representation: North and South America
Nomads of Sound is a collaborative performance project featuring Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares and Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), blending their styles and voices on the repertoire of both.
The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices (Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares) is an ensemble of rare artistic gift and enormous popular appeal. The choir truly represents one of the most amazing success stories in music. Created in the early 1950’s as The Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir, the choir’s first mission was to record authentic choral folk songs to be broadcast first on the radio and later on TV. Since then, the choir has performed more than 1250 concerts in major concert halls all over the world under the direction of the conductor Prof. Dora Hristova.
Their latest project finds them collaborating with Lisa Gerrard as a guest singer. Lisa’s musical journey began in the early 1980s when she and fellow Australian Brendan Perry formed duo ‘Dead Can Dance’. In 2012 the band reunited for a sell-out world tour. With nine albums released between 1984 and 1995, the duo’s musical canvas expanded with each release to take in a timeless mix of world music influences, medieval chants, folk ballads, baroque stylings, Celtic flavors, electronics, samples and anything else that took their fancy. Several solo and collaborative albums were well received and Lisa made a natural progression to composing for films.
With a vision and vocal style that is as unique as it is precise and all-embracing, Lisa Gerrard then established herself as one of the world’s most highly acclaimed film composers, winning a Golden Globe for her work on the score for ‘Gladiator’ with Hans Zimmer. Lisa also received an Oscar nomination for ‘Gladiator’ along with two further Golden Globe Award nominations for her scores to ‘Ali’ and ‘The Insider’. Lisa’s film work also includes ‘Whale Rider’, a feature that received an Academy Award nomination and garnered Lisa an international award for the score.
The unique voice and style of Lisa Gerrard come as a perfect addition to the sound of the choir, taking the music to a different level and helping it cross borders.

“The performance of the Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices and Lisa Gerrard shattered the status quo of contemporary music, proving once again, that art can have pop culture appeal, without sacrificing artistic merit”. BTVNews
“Only when you experience Lisa and the Mysteries’ live performance can you realize the depth of their connection and how amazing the synergy between them is, and why the Australian [singer] does not hide the fact that the Bulgarian singers are her biggest inspiration.” BTVNews
“Congratulations are in order for the managers of The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices choir, who decided to break the conservative norms of the traditional folklore ensemble and to add to the group two percussionists, a keyboardist, guitar player, and beatboxer. When folklore music is arranged by talented artists and then performed by other talented artists, even ideas that at first seem to be incompatible prove to be a perfect match. This is one of the best ways for folklore music to continue thriving for centuries to come – enriching itself from the musical culture of each age while staying true to its origin.” Sofialive
