Biography

In 2013, the seven musicians of BARRUT – each from different musical backgrounds – came together around a shared passion for voice, poetry, rhythms, and song. They find the source for their magnetic and wild songs in the vocal polyphonies of the French region of Occitania. Initially, the group set existing Occitan poetic texts to music, but they quickly began writing their own lyrics. In 2021, the group added a percussionist, further strengthening its rhythmic foundation.

BARRUT’s repertoire derives its unique character from the belief that their music must emerge from a shared creative process. BARRUT fosters the exchange of linguistic, melodic, and rhythmic expertise with musical groups that feature strong regional languages such as Breton and Corsican, and with groups that have rich traditional rhythms from countries like La Réunion. They also develop their musical practice through collaborations beyond traditional music to Afrobeat, rock and hip hop. Through these collaborations, BARRUT is constantly refining and affirming their collective voice and musicality through exploration, introspection, and expression.

BARRUT has created an original musical style and a unique way of storytelling, winning over audiences and gaining recognition from professionals. After more than 10 years of existence and hundreds of concerts, BARRUT carries the Mediterranean at the core of their powerful rhythms, creating a unique polyphonic sound environment which is both contemporary and timeless.
