Biography

Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and artivist who has distinguished herself as one of the most powerful voices in the contemporary Latin American music scene. Her art spans music, activism and politics, creating sound discourses that confront structural racism, LGBTphobia, black feminism, love and community affections through a critical and sensitive aesthetic.

Bia began her musical studies as a child: She started playing the piano at the age of 3, in church and later at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music. At the age of 12, she wrote her first composition — a defining moment in her relationship with identity, gender and religion.Music has always been central to her life. As a multi-instrumentalist, she deepened her passion for the guitar, double bass, cavaquinho, atabaque and drums and many more.

Bia defines her work as Contemporary Brazilian Music, concepts that place her work as a political and social expression of marginalized bodies and that stem from her own experience.

Musically, her work blends elements of soul, blues, reggae, funk, R&B, rap, and references to Brazilian music, dialoguing with Afro-diasporic traditions and languages. Her lyrics are anchored in what critics call escrevivência — writing-living that combines autobiography and social criticism, a concept linked to the writer Conceição Evaristo.

Bia’s single ‘Cota Não É Esmola’ went viral when it was released in 2018, accumulated millions of views on YouTube, and later had its lyrics required reading in official programmes at the University of Brasília. In 2022, she participated in WOMEX, the world’s leading music fair, presenting contemporary Brazilian music to a global audience. Since then, she has performed hundreds of concerts around the globe,  consolidating her international presence and engaging different audiences with her performances and artistic discourse.

“Brazil’s Bia Ferreira was … spell-binding all on her own. Seated on a stool, switching between nylon string and electric guitar, she fairly hypnotized with percussive guitar technique … and a spectacular voice that had the crowd roaring.” Banning Eyre – AFROPOP
