FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2/24/2017
Russia’s riot grrrl activists, Pussy Riot, reveal a 9 date West Coast warm-up tour around the SXSW premiere of their psych rock theater production, “REVOLUTION.”
Based on the original novel by Maria Alyokhina, this show tells the story of everyday women gathering to resist the fascist regime of President Vladimir Putin. From their balaclava-clad punk prayer in Saviour Cathedral to their guerilla-style protests in Moscow’s Red Square, the hour long piece reveals the group’s excruciating account of a corrupt trial, years of violent abuse in the Russian prison system, and their never-ending demand for justice in a hostile state. REVOLUTION brings attention to the ever present problems of censorship in the media, violence towards the LGBTQ community, corruption within Russia’s judicial system, and use of tyrannical use of violence within the country’s prison complex.
The roster of performers include Maria Alyokhina herself, Kiryl Kanstantsinau, AWOTT (Asian Women On The Telephone) psycho-punk duo, and VJ Vasily Bogatov.
Directed by Yury Muravitsky and produced by Alexander Cheparukhin, with video footage by Taisia Krugovykh and video art by Katya Sсheglova, this is a one-time world debut.
The evening will end with a conversation with members of the creative team.

The Russian feminist punk rock protest group, Pussy Riot, spoke to an over capacity crowd at an event celebrating Punkfest Cornell, a week-long celebration of punk music and its history.
Pussy Riot, a female group based in Moscow, has “staged unauthorized provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations across Russia,” said a briefing for the event, which was hosted in Klarman Hall Wednesday.
Themes of the group’s videos include “feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to the policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they regard as a dictator, and links between Putin and the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church,” according to the briefing.
Pussy Riot Release Video Protesting Sentence of Russia’s Opposition Leader
Posted on December 31, 2014

Pussy Riot have released a new video to protest against the treatment of Russia’s opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who received a suspended jail term today (December 30) for supposedly stealing 30 million roubles (£334,000) from French cosmetics company Yves Rocher.
Navalny was sentenced to a suspended three-and-a-half-year jail term. His brother Oleg, a former postal executive who has no history of dissidence against Russia’s rulers, was jailed for three-and-a-half years. Oleg’s sentence is believed to mark a return to the Soviet Union’s treatment of dissidents in the 1960s, when relatives would be punished instead.
