Nomfusi zooms in on self-healing!
Singer’s music inspiration drawn from childhood struggles
NOMFUSI is on a journey to heal herself.
The singer, whose name is Nomfusi Gotyana, said she’s been forced to confront painful childhood experiences to understand how they’ve shaped the woman she’s become.
Nomfusi, from KwaZakhele in the Eastern Cape, told Daily Sun her healing journey has also inspired the music she’s currently working on.
When it’s your physical body, I mean, if you break an arm, for instance, you go through the healing process. So, I’ve now been focusing on my healing journey, and this album is coming from that. Apparently, there’s amazing music that comes from brokenness and from going through healing.
— Nomfusi said.
Childhood pain
Nomfusi, known for her hits Nontsokolo, Iqaqa and Ungamyeki, said her childhood experiences have affected different segments of her adult l ife, including the way she chooses partners and responding to certain situations.
“I ’ve been open about how I grew up, losing my mum at a young age through HIV/Aids, my dad in prison, basically growing up with no parents. And how all that has impacted me, even in my adulthood, how I choose partners, for instance, how I choose where to be, how I get influenced by certain things,” she said.
Nomfusi said she eventually realised she needed to reconnect with the younger version of herself.
‘She doesn’t have to beg for love’
“And I had to come to a point where I need to find Nomfusi, and I had to go back to the young Nomfusi and actually tell her that it’s actually okay. She doesn’t have to try and fit in.
“She doesn’t have to beg for love. She doesn’t have to… All those things that come with rejection and not having a support structure. So, that’s where my healing is basically from,” said Nomfusi.
New music on the way
The singer said the healing process has also opened the door to new music.
“I ’m working on an amazing, amazing new body of work. I can’t wait to present this to you, guys. This is me in my truest form.”
Nomfusi is also working on collaborations, including one with trumpeter Sidney, while she considers a youth choir collaborating.
“So, I am collaborating with Sidney. He’s playing a trumpet. I’m excited about that. I might be collaborating with the Youth Choir. I love kids. People who know me, they know I love youth. I love kids. So, I’m excited about those collaborations,”
— the songstress said.
Nomfusi said she hopes people will be ready for what comes out of her healing journey.
“And apparently there’s amazing music that comes from brokenness and from going through healing. So be expectant, be on the loop. I t’s coming out,” she said.
